6 values for Firle C of E Primary school…

Last month I completed a project for Firle school working on their 6 values of  kindness, respect, working with others, forgiveness, perseverance and aspiration.

I spent a day with the children in their classes where they each interpreted one of the values by linking it to relevant gospel stories. This was through drawing or painting.

Here are a selection of the children’s drawings…

Every single one is going to be made into a prayer flag which will then be hung outside the school.

In addition, I painted my own interpretation of each value which I then presented back to the school in assembly one month later.

The children recognised all the values through the pictures (for which I was very happy and relieved!)

Chalkpit. An exhibition of contemporary art at Glynde Place

CHALKPIT VIVA PHOTO (1)

This weekend,  there will be an exhibition of contemporary art at The Coach House, Glynde Place.

Called Chalkpit, it is the first in a series of events that I am putting together as part of my residency in Glynde.

I have asked eight local artists to create pieces of work as a response to the chalkpit (called Balcombe pit) as it is today.

These will be on display for one weekend only, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April.

The artists are: Jenny Arran  Sarah Colbourne  Alexander Johnson  Isobel Smith            Bob Dixon  Lucy Newman  Guy Stevens   Emily Warren

More information about the exhibition can be found here

Hope you can make it along!

Day 7, 99 ways to map a walk at Martyrs’ Gallery, Lewes

Final day, can’t believe how different the gallery looks!

cofcofcofcofcof

We had 67 visitors over the weekend and just under 50 during the week.

I think the introductory text I wrote for the exhibition says it all really…

cof

Here are some more of the pieces of work by people who took part…

The End…

Day 6, 99 ways to map a walk…

cof

A few more tweaks to get the gallery ready… and we’re off!!

Three people waiting to come in before we are even open. A promising start.

Two ex-art students set off on the walk. Keen to get drawing when they return…

cof

I love their finished pieces…

And then, the dad and his 2 daughters from day 2 turn up… with 10 friends!

cof

Soon the kids are asking if they can go on the walk, so off they all go.

And back they come…

cof

along with more people. Just looking this time…

Some group drawing… with Jasper!

cof

And one of my favourite contributions…

cof

Which I think looks just right above my little map sculpture…

cof

35 visitors today. Some of which went on the walk and contributed a drawing.

Loved every minute of it.

Day 5, 99 ways to map a walk…

Loving the way the gallery looks this morning. Really coming together…

cof

First people arrive…

cof

and the floor is proving popular today…

cof

another family pop in..

cof

and the massive charcoal is out again…

cof

Smiles all round…

cof

and another cute dog…

Another enjoyable day.

Putting final touches to the gallery before it opens for public viewing tomorrow…

Day 4, 99 ways to map a walk…

Decided to bring a little friend along with me today…

cof

Jasper.

And soon people start arriving….

cof

..and more…

cof

The big charcoal is popular…

cof

and the gallery is filling up…

cof

lovely comments from people taking part…

cof

and more people turn up…

cof

SUCH a good day today.

Loads of people going on the walk and coming back inspired to pick up some charcoal and draw.

Just great 🙂

Day 3, 99 ways to map a walk…

A slow start so I decided to make a small sculpture with some materials I had brought with me…

cof

… some wire and some red wool…

…I imagined the walk and started twisting the wire right and left as I followed the route in my mind.

I then decided to stretch the wire into a 3d shape as opposed to a line, and link the start and finish with some red wool

This was the result..

cof

I was pretty pleased with this. It will make it into the final exhibition alongside my shoes, continuous line drawing and all the visitor’s pictures.

Still quiet, so I decide to construct something else.  More collected materials…

cof

..and another structure…

cof

I’m not so sure about this one, but I like the masking tape outline of the walk on the floor.

Still no visitors today so I decide to crack open the gigantic charcoal stick I bought yesterday..

cof

Yep, it is MASSIVE!

Decide to do the walk again for inspiration.

When I walk through Market Tower and look up I particularly like the perspective of the lantern and the glass roof. So I draw a simple sketch and take it back to the gallery (and the charcoal…)

cof

Had great fun doing this!

Going to tape some cardboard together into large ‘canvasses’ so people can have a go at using this.
